Training New Employees During The Pandemic

zoom meeting

There are many challenges we are facing during this pandemic and training new hires remotely is one of them. Your current employees have a head start on working remotely as they are accustomed and trained in their position so it is easier for them to transition to working from home. However, new hires do not have that luxury and are thrown into a position where they either have limited or no knowledge of the job. Here is a guide to help you train new employees remotely to help them transition them into their position and increase productivity.

Ensure that new employees have the proper supplies and training to do their work

This can include hardware, software, office supplies, etc. to be able to fulfill their tasks.

  • Do your employees have two monitors to make their work easier? Consider purchasing dual monitors for them to ease them into their position.
  • Give them access to different programs like Microsoft Office, Adobe Creative Suite, JavaScript, etc. and give them a tutorial on how to use them if they do not know how to navigate the program, especially if this is an entry-level position.

Let them know the standards and expectations of the work they need to produce to satisfy management. Also, let them know if it is their responsibility to purchase their own supplies or if you will provide them.

Communicate the company culture

Anyone who is new, even in person, will not know the culture of your company. Here are a few details to provide them with:

  • Expectations of how you should look (casual vs. professional) in virtual meetings.
  • Are you more informal or formal when you email coworkers?
  • What are your company’s core values and how will the new hire exemplify them?
  • What does teamwork look like in your company?

There are many other aspects to your company culture. Analyze them and communicate this with new hires to integrate them into the team. New hires may feel embarrassed if they commit a company faux pas, so find ways to alleviate this stress and make them feel a part of the team.

Meet with new hires daily and frequently

Sometimes people are too afraid to ask for help. Consider walking them through their daily tasks and record (if possible) the process so they have something to look back on if they get stuck while on their own. Meet with new hires frequently, even if they are performing perfectly, to ensure that you are answering all their questions and concerns about their position. It may feel like micromanaging at first, but clarifying each step of the process and ensuring that rookies understand everything is easier than correcting the wrong way of doing something.

Have new hires meet the entire team

New employees may feel disconnected from your business if they are only interacting with a few people. Take time to introduce the team to the new person so they feel welcomed into the company. Even if they will most likely never interact with a person, it is nice for the new hire and coworkers to know everyone. Encourage employees to set up individual meetings with the rookie to help them feel more comfortable. Not introducing the new hire to everyone may make them feel lonely and unwanted which will make it easier for them to leave or not feel passionate about their job. Have fun as this is a new addition to the team!

Be a mentor to the new hires

Be open and approachable to the new people coming under your wing. If you have a cold exterior, they may feel less inclined to come to you for help if any problems arise. This also cultivates an environment of relationship and skill-building to help them be successful in their role. Emphasize that they are accountable for their success but you are there to help them.
